A chat about food

Everywhere I look in the diet world on the blogs I see people eating oatmeal for breakfast. Now when I eat oatmeal I eat oatmeal with fruit, nuts and cinnamon and a T of cream. Not so for the people in blogland. They throw in butterscotch chips, peanut butter, coconut, broken up protein bars and all manner of stuff. Well Ive decided to try some of these concoctions and see what it all tastes like. This morning I am going to have a gourmet cup of oatmeal. I'll let you know how it goes.

You know, I have eating the right foods down to a T now but somehow I've got to get the exercise in. Now is not the time to begin an exercise program because Id be bound to fail. You see I have a severe head cold, a swollen muscle around my knee and tennis elbow so bad I can hardly move my arm. Theres no point in starting when I know I will fail.

A couple days ago I decided to have a peanut buster parfait from Dairy Queen. It put me 100 calories over my allotted 1500 for the day but it was good. However, here comes the shocker; it was not as good as I remembered it to be. I am used to eating real foods with real flavor and that was just a cold mess with chocolate. I realized right then and there that I would have sooner had those calories in a spinach salad with strawberries, roasted pecans and a little bacon, drizzled with raspberry vinaigrette or a bowl of pasta boiled in broth with a little olive oil and basil thrown on it, or roasted veggies drizzled with olive oil. I love the taste of real food.

You know I said I was going to switch my diet to a whole food diet? Well guess what I discovered. The only switch I had to make was to switch my peanut butter to the real stuff. It was the kids that needed the change. My diet was already whole food. I think the longer you stay on an eating program you just gravitate toward whole foods because you get more bang for your buck. Besides that I raise my own vegetable garden and can and preserve everything from it so my cupboards and freezers are full of organic foods. I have two full shelves of frozen berries in my freezer. This afternoon I'm making strawberry smoothies for the kids.

Healthy eating is really not that hard. I am a stay at home mom and homeschool my kids so we don't eat out much anyway and I'm not tempted by office food like some of you are. However I am always by my kitchen and that tends to be a temptation. But what is stocked in that kitchen is up to me so if I fail its all my fault.

So I plow on, mindful of my calories and thanking God for all the great foods He has put on the planet for our enjoyment.

  1. I never heard of putting all those things in oatmeal. I had oatmeal this morning with skim milk and splenda. Those ideas do sound yummy! Julie

  2. Im more a plain oater as well.
For me I fear tossing all the sweetstuff in will make me want more sweets.
I end up with more savory oats and add in eggs :) and/or protein powder OR laughing cow cheese!

  3. When I use to diet, I would go off of it constantly and say, "I want some real food".......hello! I am eating real food now! Like before, I meant..........I want pancakes with syrup, a donut, etc. It wasn't "real" food because there was so much crap added to it....it was totally artificial. So, it wasn't "real" I craved........I was craving what I "used" to eat. The food I "used to eat" made me fat and I wanted it. How silly of me ; )

I love my oats for breakfast. My new favorite way to eat them is with low fat cottage cheese and cinnamon.......sprinked with a tsp of ground nuts..........a perfect balance of healthy carbs, protein, and healthy fats ;) and it's "real food"--- It stays with me for a good 4 hrs too
