Hamburger Substitute Anyone?

I have no idea how anyone eats turkey burgers! They are the most spiteful tasting things I have eaten in ages. I bought a bag at Costco and now I'm going to throw the rest of them away. I need a good idea for a burger other than hamburger. I also don't like the Bocca(sp?) Burgers. Can anyone help me out here. All I ask is for something juicy and tasty to put on my bun but lo in calories and loaded with protein. It must be too much to ask of this universe!

  1. Ew, I agree! They are always so salty and mealy and weird! (Oh my!) The best alternative I've found is to buy plain turkey or chicken breast cutlets (or buy regular breasts and pound them a bit thinner), coat in some spices or a marinade you like, bake, and use that. Usually half of one is perfect to fit in a bun, and you can also cut them up for wraps, salads, etc.

You can also cook them in advance and then freeze them, so they're still basically as convenient as a frozen turkey burger.

  2. I love turkey burgers! But you can't buy them pre-made- you have to get ground turkey meat and mix up your own burgers. I add worcestershire and A1 along with fresh garlic, onions and yellow peppers and lots of seasoning!

I dislike the premade ones because they are so BLAND!

try making your own before you completely swear off turkey burgers.

  3. Honestly, after I tried making them myself (and didn't care for them) I noticed there wasn't THAT much benefit over lean ground beef. I get 97% lean and if you drain and rinse, I think it's not really THAT bad.

At least that's what I tell myself! ;)

  4. Hmmm... I have no idea. I always just get the lean hamburger and add stuff to it... such as diced green peppers, A1 steak sauce, onion powder, salt, pepper, and a little bit of water so it stays moist as it cooks. I broil it... so I don't feel guilty about eating it. And, of course... I eat it on a whole wheat bun with lettuce and tomato.

  5. I'm not a vegetarian, but I like Morning Star's Black Bean Burgers. I usually make turkey burgers myself using the recipe from the Body For Life cookbook.

  6. Hmmm, never tried a turkey burger tho I have heard they are supposed to be very low fat. What I use is ground bison meat (my father farms and has several bison so we get our bison from him - organic "free range" he calls them lol) You still get that "red meat" taste but with very very little fat.

  7. My daughter loves the Morningstarr Farms brand of veggie burgers. Both the grillers and the prime variety. She also likes to make bean burgers with pinto beans, mushrooms and egg white and a bit of cheese.
